Polar light is one of the most impressive natural phenomena ever: fluorescent light transforms the deep black post-giant into a sea of magical green tones. With three of his most spectacular models, A. Lange & Söhne has embarked on a journey to Iceland to experience the fascination of this indescribable nature show live on site. The result is breathtaking impressions between light and darkness in the middle of original nature.

The dial is made of blackened silver with generous cut-outs and a black-tinted semitransparent sapphire crystal. The special coating applied thereon blocks most of the visible light, but not the UV rays, which stimulate phosphorescence on the large-diameter mechanism. While the ten-cross is decorated with white luminous masses and printed with black digits, the transparent glass pane is also provided with black numerals and rotates in front of the backdrop of the date window.
This is how night-lit displays work
Watches with illuminated indicators require a light source to charge the illuminated light on the displays so that they light up optimally. Thanks to their black tinted semi-translucent dial and a sophisticated mechanism, the displays of the Lange Lange 1 lunar phase "lumen" and the other "lumen" models from A. Lange & Söhne can be permanently charged with light energy. Also the moon disk is made of glass: The surface is coated in a patented process and the 1164 stars and the moon are cut out by laser. A luminous mass behind the moon disk makes the moon and stars sparkle. The large moon phase display occupies a prominent place on the main dial. Once set correctly, it must be corrected by one day after 122.6 years.
Therefore polar light green
It is only a few days between September and March that we can experience the natural drama in the polar region, where complex physical phenomena show the polar planes glimmering in all colors in the upper layers of the earth's atmosphere. The green light, for which our eyes are particularly receptive, develops at a height of around 100 kilometers. Here, oxygen atoms are applied to electrically charged particles of the solar wind. In this case, light with a wavelength of 557.7 nanometers is emitted and perceived as green by our eyes.
